There was a time when gallantry was a symbol of respect and admiration. It was not merely a set of formal gestures but an attitude of courtesy, elegance, and consideration toward women. Gallantry toward women was a clear reflection of devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Today, however, this virtue seems to be fading, a victim of a society that has mistaken chivalry for submission or condescension. The fear of being misinterpreted has led many men to suppress actions that were once natural, such as opening a door, giving way, or offering a sincere compliment. Modernity, with its emphasis on a misunderstood notion of equality, has relegated gallantry to something almost anecdotal, as if showing attentiveness and care were merely remnants of a bygone era.
Yet gallantry is not a matter of gender but of values. It is not an attempt at superiority but a reflection of education and class. Its loss impoverishes not only the relationships between men and women but also the very fabric of courtesy and refinement in society.
We must reclaim gallantry with a renewed spirit, not as a social obligation but as an art that expresses respect, admiration, and charm.
