Father Membre was born in France in 1645 and entered the local friary of the Franciscan Recollect Province of St. Anthony. He arrived in Canada in 1675 and in 1679 he traveled south on Mission to the Illinois territory. He returned to France in 1681 and became the Guardian of his friary.
In 1684 he returned to New France with two other Franciscans recollects and three Priests of the order of St. Sulpice. The French settlers planned to make a settlement near the modern day area of New Orleans but a storm caused them to land 400 miles west in Spanish territory, near present day Matagorda Bay, TX. The leader of the voyage, René Robert de La Salle, claimed they had landed “western mouth of the Colbert River,” in Louisiana. The settlement, named Fort St. Louis, suffered with illness, malnutrition, and constant attacks by the Karankawa and Pirates. The the French mistook the Karankawa for the Hasinai Tribe, a close ally in Louisiana.
Father Membre attempted to evangelize the Karankawa with little success but managed to establish peace with them. Eventually, the settlers discovered they were no where near where they had planned. In 1686, their ship sank, leaving the settlers stranded. Fort St. Louis was moved further in land in what is now Victoria County, La Salle set out to explore the surrounding country and find French settlements. While on expedition he was killed by his own men. The Karankawa, learning of La Salle’s death and the disunity among the French, attacked the settlement suddenly.
In 1687, the Spanish found the ruins of Fort St. Louis, having learned of the French settlement from captured pirates who turned out to be defectors from La Salle. Father Zenobius Membre remains were found in the chapel, considering he was wearing vestment and near the altar, he was either saying Mass or praying during the attack. His remains were moved in the sanctuary of Mission Nuestra Señora del Espíritu Santo de Zúñiga in 1722. When the Mission was moved in 1749, it is likely his remains were also moved and are presently under the sanctuary of Mission Espíritu Santo.

Sus restos fueron trasladados al santuario de la Misión Nuestra Señora del Espíritu Santo de Zúñiga, en 1722. Cuando la Misión fue trasladada en 1749, es probable que sus restos también fueran trasladados y se encuentren actualmente bajo el santuario de la Misión Espíritu Santo.
