Last 10th July 2023, Amadeus Fernando Pagente (a.k.a. Pura Luka Vega), a local member of the LGBTQ community, posted a video of himself singing an upbeat remix of the «Ama Namin» (the Our Father in Tagálog) whilst dressed as the Black Nazarene. His viral video drew flak from various sectors of Filipino society who found the video offensive, blasphemous and disappointing.
Pagente, a contestant on the series Drag Den, said he understood that his video didn’t please many people but he added that he would neither delete it nor apologise for his actions. He also said that people shouldn’t dictate on him how to practise his faith or how to do his drag, invoking freedom of expression. The video is said to have garnered over 19.3 million viewers.
Senator Ana Theresia «Risa» Hontiveros de Baraquel, who is the Chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Children and Women and a proponent of the SOGIE (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression) Bill said in a statement that she found Pagente’s video «regrettable» despite her being a «woman of faith» , but at the same time she cautioned the public not to use the incident to deny LGBTQ members their «rights» .
Senate President Juan Miguel «Migz» Zubiri said the video mocked Christianity and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. Zubiri said in a statement that the video «is the height of the misuse and abuse of our freedom of expression that borders on criminal activity. It offends the sensibilities of our Christian brothers and sisters, deeply demeans the faith of millions of Filipinos, and dangerously scales the boundaries of protected speech and expression» . Zubiri said the culprit Pagente can be charged under Article 201 of the Revised Penal Code, which punishes those who «offend any race or religion in the performance of obscene or indecent plays, scenes, acts or shows in theaters, fairs, or any other place» . He urged authorities to look into the matter.
Senate Minority Leader Aquilino «Koko» Pimentel III urged concerned sectors not to allow Pagente to profit from his despicable work. Pimentel said that people interested in suing Pagente should study their legal grounds.
Senator Joseph Victor «JV» Ejército was also quick to slam Pagente’s viral video, saying it offended him as a Catholic.
In the House of Representatives, House Committee on Women and Gender Equality Chairman. Bataán First District Representative «Geraldine» Román posted on social media to remind his fellow LGBTQ members to do good.
Meanwhile, CPP (Communist Party of the Philippines) legal front Kabataan (Youth) Party-list Representative Raoul Manuel called drag an «art form» that is open to criticism. He said that he found it «disheartening» how one’s drag show will cause «an explosion of online hate and threats against the queer community» . He added that the SOGIE Equality Bill should be discussed all the more in public fora and passed by Congress.
Pagente’s controversial viral video also drew mixed reactions from Filipino netizens.
The Catholic Faith Defense Philippines posted on Facebook last Thursday 13th July that Pagente, even if he claimed to be very careful, still offended the Catholic faithful by his show for some reasons, including the inappropriateness given to religious symbols.
Julius Arévalo of the Catholic movement Live Pure Movement wrote on his Facebook page last Thursday that Pagente’s video is pure mockery and called on Pagente, addressing him by his screen name, to realise how he deeply pained a lot of people by his performance.
Dr. Rjhay Reyes, meanwhile, tweeted last Wednesday 12th July that Pagente’s actions speak for himself and not for the LGBTQ community as a whole, adding that not all members of the LGBTQ are that disrespectful. Dr. Reyes said he was so disappointed by the video because it’s «too much» .
Another lover of drag shows tweeted that she couldn’t finish watching Pagente’s show because she found it blasphemous.
Others, however, defended Pagente, saying his actions are «plain art» .
The CBCP (Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines) also expressed dismay over Pagente’s drag show and rendition of the Our Father. Their spokesman Father Jerome Secillano called Pagente’s performance a mockery of Religion, saying that religious elements or sacred objects of Religion should never be used for secular purposes. He added that the show also borders on profanity and is even blasphemous and sacrilegious. He also expressed disappointment in the way the Lord’s Prayer was sung because the prayer taught by Our Lord Himself should never be used for entertainment purposes. Father Secillano also said that the CBCP will allow other priests to file charges against Pagente.
Meanwhile, Legaspi Bishop Joel Baylón condemned the drag show in a circular as a clear sign of utter disrespect for religious objects and symbols. The Bishop added that it is important to recognise that Our Lord’s image and the Lord’s Prayer, amongst other sacred symbols, are fundamental to the Catholic Faith and should never be treated as mere objects of amusement and entertainment but should rather be treated with the deepest reverence and respect so as not to mock God Himself. But Bishop Baylón’s circular fell short of calling for acts of reparation and penance.
The Cardinal Archbishop of Manila has yet to make a statement against the drag show. The same thing with the Archbishops of Cebú, Nueva Segovia, Jaro, Nueva Cáceres and Zamboanga.
On the other hand, CBCP President and Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David said that Our Lord is «more blasphemed by those who regularly go to church and neglect the poor, are indifferent to extrajudicial killings, etc.» , whilst Lingayén-Dagupan Archbishop Sócrates Villegas said in a gospel reflection last Saturday 15th July that the «seeds of blasphemy» were already planted under the Duterte Administration (2016-2022), especially when former President Rodrigo Duterte called God «stupid», and he added that there are other things that are «more offensive» than Pagente’s show.
The public outrage over the drag queen Pagente’s blasphemous viral video is one big proof that Filipinas still has «amór» and the sense of defending their holy religion because of the Catholic Faith given to her by the Spaniards even if she is on the brink of intense Westernisation and Americanisation.

El pasado 10 de julio de 2023, Amadeus Fernando Pagente (alias Pura Luka Vega), miembro local de la comunidad LGBTQ, publicó un vídeo en el que aparecía cantando una alegre remezcla del «Ama Namin» (el Padre Nuestro en tagálog) vestido como el Nazareno Negro. Su vídeo viral suscitó las críticas de diversos sectores de la sociedad filipina, que lo consideraron ofensivo, blasfemo y decepcionante.
Pagente, concursante de la serie Drag Den, dijo que entendía que su vídeo no gustara a mucha gente, pero añadió que ni lo borraría ni se disculparía por sus actos. También dijo que la gente no debería dictarle cómo practicar su fe o cómo hacer su drag, invocando la libertad de expresión. El vídeo ha recibido más de 19,3 millones de visitas.
La senadora Ana Theresia «Risa» Hontiveros de Baraquel, presidenta de la Comisión de la Infancia y la Mujer del Senado y defensora del proyecto de ley SOGIE (Orientación Sexual, Identidad y Expresión de Género), declaró en un comunicado que el vídeo de Pagente le parecía «lamentable» a pesar de ser una «mujer de fe» , pero al mismo tiempo advirtió a la opinión pública de que no utilizara el incidente para negar sus «derechos» a los miembros del colectivo LGBTQ.
El Presidente del Senado, Juan Miguel «Migz» Zubiri, dijo que el vídeo se burlaba del cristianismo y debe ser condenado en los términos más enérgicos posibles. Zubiri afirmó en un comunicado que el vídeo «es el colmo del mal uso y abuso de nuestra libertad de expresión que raya en lo delictivo. Ofende la sensibilidad de nuestros hermanos y hermanas cristianos, degrada profundamente la fe de millones de filipinos y traspasa peligrosamente los límites de la libertad de expresión» . Zubiri dijo que el culpable Pagente puede ser acusado en virtud del artículo 201 del Código Penal Revisado, que castiga a quienes «ofendan a cualquier raza o religión en la representación de obras, escenas, actos o espectáculos obscenos o indecentes en teatros, ferias o cualquier otro lugar». Instó a las autoridades a investigar el asunto.
El líder de la minoría en el Senado, Aquilino «Koko» Pimentel III, instó a los sectores interesados a no permitir que Pagente se lucre con su despreciable obra. Pimentel dijo que las personas interesadas en demandar a Pagente deberían estudiar sus fundamentos jurídicos.
El senador Joseph Victor «JV» Ejército también se apresuró a criticar el vídeo viral de Pagente, afirmando que le ofendía como católico.
En la Cámara de Representantes, el Presidente de la Comisión de la Mujer e Igualdad de Género. Geraldine» Román, representante del primer distrito de Bataán, publicó en las redes sociales un recordatorio a sus compañeros LGBTQ para que hagan el bien.
Por su parte, el representante del frente legal del Partido Comunista de Filipinas (Kabataan), Raoul Manuel, calificó el drag de «forma de arte», criticable. Afirmó que le resultaba «descorazonador» que un espectáculo de drags provocara «una explosión de odio y amenazas en Internet contra la comunidad queer» . Añadió que el proyecto de ley de igualdad SOGIE debería debatirse aún más en foros públicos y aprobarse en el Congreso.
El polémico vídeo viral de Pagente también suscitó reacciones encontradas entre los internautas filipinos.
La organización Catholic Faith Defense Philippines (un grupo diocesano de apologética) publicó en Facebook el pasado jueves 13 de julio que Pagente, aunque afirmaba ser muy cuidadoso, seguía ofendiendo a los fieles católicos con su espectáculo por algunas razones, entre ellas lo inapropiado de los símbolos religiosos.
Julius Arévalo, del movimiento católico Live Pure Movement, escribió en su página de Facebook el pasado jueves que el vídeo de Pagente es pura burla y pidió a Pagente, dirigiéndose a él por su nombre de usuario, que se diera cuenta de cómo ha herido profundamente a mucha gente con su actuación.
El Dr. Rjhay Reyes, por su parte, tuiteó el pasado miércoles 12 de julio que las acciones de Pagente hablan por sí mismas y no por la comunidad LGBTQ en su conjunto, añadiendo que no todos los miembros de LGBTQ son tan irrespetuosos. El Dr. Reyes se mostró muy decepcionado por el vídeo porque es «demasiado» .
Otra amante de los espectáculos drag tuiteó que no pudo terminar de ver el espectáculo de Pagente porque le parecía blasfemo.
Otros, sin embargo, defendieron a Pagente, diciendo que sus acciones son «puro arte» .
La CBCP (Conferencia Episcopal de Filipinas) también expresó su consternación por el espectáculo drag de Pagente y su interpretación del Padre Nuestro. Su portavoz, el padre Jerome Secillano, calificó la actuación de Pagente de burla de la religión, afirmando que los elementos religiosos o los objetos sagrados de la religión nunca deben utilizarse con fines profanos. Añadió que el espectáculo también roza la blasfemia e incluso es blasfemo y sacrílego. También expresó su decepción por la forma en que se cantó el Padre Nuestro, porque la oración enseñada por Nuestro Señor mismo nunca debe utilizarse con fines de entretenimiento. El padre Secillano dijo también que la CBCP permitirá que otros sacerdotes presenten cargos contra Pagente.
Mientras tanto, el obispo de Legaspi, Joel Baylón, condenó el espectáculo de drags en una circular como una clara señal de falta de respeto absoluta hacia los objetos y símbolos religiosos. El obispo añadió que es importante reconocer que la imagen de Nuestro Señor y el Padre Nuestro, entre otros símbolos sagrados, son fundamentales para la fe católica y nunca deben tratarse como meros objetos de diversión y entretenimiento, sino con la más profunda reverencia y respeto para no burlarse de Dios mismo. Pero la circular del obispo Baylón se quedó corta a la hora de pedir actos de reparación y penitencia.
El cardenal arzobispo de Manila aún no se ha pronunciado contra el espectáculo de drags. Lo mismo ocurre con los arzobispos de Cebú, Nueva Segovia, Jaro, Nueva Cáceres y Zamboanga.
Por otra parte, el presidente de la CBCP y obispo de Caloocan, Pablo Virgilio David, dijo que Nuestro Señor es «más blasfemado por aquellos que van regularmente a la iglesia y descuidan a los pobres, son indiferentes a los asesinatos extrajudiciales, etc.» , mientras que el arzobispo de Lingayén-Dagupan, Sócrates Villegas, dijo en una reflexión evangélica el pasado sábado 15 de julio que las «semillas de la blasfemia» ya fueron plantadas bajo la Administración Duterte (2016-2022), especialmente cuando el expresidente Rodrigo Duterte llamó a Dios «estúpido» , y añadió que hay otras cosas que son «más ofensivas» que el espectáculo de Pagente.
La indignación pública por el vídeo viral blasfemo de la drag queen Pagente es una gran prueba de que Filipinas todavía tiene amor y sentido de la defensa de su santa religión debido a la fe católica que le dieron los españoles, incluso si está al borde de una intensa europeización y americanización.
